Domestic partnerships are legal relationships traditionally available to same-sex couples. It is also available to couples in which at least one party is 62 years of age or older. California pioneered this option to protect the interests of individuals not recognized under the traditional umbrella of marriage. Benefits of the registry include hospital visitation rights, estate planning benefits, and more.
It is important to be aware that domestic relationships do not carry all of the same rights and responsibilities found in a traditional marriage. However, California Family Code ยง 297.5 is still very significant in light of other state's shortcomings in this regard.
